Hi-Pot Testing

  • Hi-Pot Test is a shortening of High Potential (High Voltage) Testing, also known as Dielectric Withstand Test. A Hi-Pot Test checks for “good insolation”, checking that no current will flow between the tested points.
  • Continuity Testing makes sure that current will flow easily between two points; Hi-Pot is the opposite, and turns the voltage up very high (1kV and over) to make sure.
  • Hi-Pot Tests are good for finding
    • nicked or crushed insulation,
    • stray wire strands in conductors or shielding braid
    • terminal spacing issues
    • corrosive contaminants
    • tolerance build-up issues
  • Hi-Pot Testing involves checking that an applied voltage hasn’t leaked away over time. The duration of Hi-Pot tests is typically around 1 minute, but should be in accordance with relevant safety standards
